Field trips
With the intent to educate and broaden the mind and at the same time to relax and have fun, the centre offers various recreational and educational activities for the children. We have taken the children to a number of picnics, museums, historical sites, talks, plays etc. Before each of these outings the children are explained the significance and importance of the place they are visiting so that they are able to absorb and benefit the most from these expeditions/trips.
Participation in various activities and competitions
Swati also organizes their participation in various competitions. Our children have taken part in a number of drawing competitions, essay writing events, debates, MUN’s (Mock United Nations) etc. They also get the opportunity to attend various workshops which expose them to different art forms. Our children have attended workshops on painting, theatre, puppet making, pottery, paper crafts, basket making, paper mache, kite making and much more! These workshops are attended by our children with great gusto! They really look forward to these activites and by way of these activities and fun learning we are able to ensure they remain associated with our Centre in their childhood, adolescence and adulthood in one way or the other. This gives us an opportunity they help them, guide them, support them and improve their quality of life.
Sports (physical) activities
Sports is another activity we at Swati consider to be very important for a childs well-being. We strongly believe that sports are as important as education for the children for the healthy development of their mind. We regularly organize sports day and competitions for our children. In partnership with CRY we have also been able to have some excellent sports programme’s for our children. One such programme is the JBC badminton programme wherein approximately 10-15 children out of a group of 60 children are selected to be trained in badminton. They attend badminton coaching 3 times a week and are giving badminton kits. The children are also given a diet chart and money to buy nutritious food through the week (swati buys and gives it to the kids to ensure money is not used for any other purpose). The children benefit a great deal from this programme and also get compete in competitions and play in stadiums. This really improves their self confidence.
Similarly the kids have had the opportunity of learning football and kabbadi through various other programmes.
Cultural programmes
Theatre is an another extra curricular programme which is very popular with the kids. The children get an opportunity to express themselves. They are encouraged to write the script of the play and then form a group and perform. Through the year we hold various cultural programmes and celebrate a number of festivals where the children have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. The children also prepare street plays on topics such as importance of education, right to information, right to education, child marriage, sanitation, seasonal diseases, girl child education etc to spread awareness within the community. Theatre also incentivizes the children who have never been to school or are drop-outs to attend more classes at the centre and eventually it enables us to mainstream them to school.
